How to Choose an IT Provider in Perth: A Practical Guide

The short answer: when you compare IT support companies in Perth, choose the IT provider that will best protect and support your business, not just the cheapest. Look for proven security credentials, clear response times, a proactive approach, transparent contracts and a team that understands businesses like yours. Then ask the hard questions before you sign.

Perth has dozens of IT support companies and managed service providers (MSPs), and most of their websites say similar things. This guide is written to help you compare them fairly. We are an MSP ourselves, so we have tried to keep it practical and honest, including the questions you should ask us.

Start with what you actually need

Before you compare providers, be clear on your own situation:

  • Fully managed or co-managed? Do you want a provider to run all of your IT, or to support an internal IT person or team with co-managed IT?
  • What matters most? Fast day-to-day help, stronger security, a big project, or someone to plan your technology strategy?
  • Compliance requirements. Do clients, tenders or insurers expect certifications such as the Essential Eight, SMB1001 or ISO 27001?
  • Locations. One office, several sites, remote workers, or remote and regional WA locations?

Seven things to look for in a Perth IT provider

1. Security credentials you can verify

Your IT provider has the keys to your entire business. That makes their own security critical. Independent certifications such as ISO 27001 or SMB1001 show they hold themselves to a recognised standard. Ask which certifications they hold and whether you can see the certificate.

2. Clear response times

"Fast support" means nothing without numbers. Ask how quickly they respond to critical issues, how quickly they usually resolve them, and how they measure it. Ask what their service desk hours are and how after-hours support works.

3. A proactive approach

A good managed service provider fixes problems before you notice them. Ask what they monitor, how they handle patching and backups, and what proactive work is included rather than billed as extra.

4. Transparent pricing and contracts

Understand exactly what is included in the monthly fee and what costs extra, such as projects, onsite visits, after-hours work or new user setup. Check the contract length, notice period and what happens if you leave.

5. You own your environment

This is one of the most overlooked points. Make sure your business owns its admin passwords, Microsoft 365 tenant, domain names and documentation, and that the provider will hand everything over if you change providers.

6. Strategy, not just support

The best providers help you plan. Ask whether they offer regular account reviews, a technology roadmap and budgeting help, and who in their team will own that relationship. Some providers offer this as a virtual CIO service.

7. Relevant experience and real reviews

Ask whether they support businesses of your size and industry, and request references you can call. Read Google reviews, looking for detail rather than just star ratings, and look for real case studies, such as our work with Statuo Group.

Questions to ask an IT provider before you sign

  • Which security certifications do you hold, and can I see them?
  • What is your response time for a critical issue, and how do you report on it?
  • What exactly is included in the monthly fee, and what is billed separately?
  • How does onboarding work, and how long does it take?
  • Who will be my main contact, and how often will we review our IT?
  • How do you protect my business, and yours, from cyber attacks?
  • If we leave, how do you hand over passwords, documentation and access?
  • Can you provide references from businesses like mine?

Red flags to watch for

  • Vague answers about security, or no security credentials of their own.
  • Long lock-in contracts with heavy exit fees or unclear handover terms.
  • Reluctance to share admin access or documentation for systems you pay for.
  • No measurable response times, or no reporting on how they perform.
  • Everything is an extra, so the low monthly price grows quickly.
  • Purely reactive support, with no monitoring, patching or planning.

Why a local Perth IT team still matters

Much IT support is now remote, but a Perth-based team still makes a difference for onsite work, office moves, hardware issues and building a real relationship. If you have offices interstate, ask how the provider supports those locations too, for example with a team in Melbourne.

Switching IT providers

Changing IT providers is less disruptive than most businesses expect when it is planned well. A good provider will run a structured onboarding: discovering and documenting your environment, deploying their tools, introducing your staff to the service desk, and working with your previous provider on handover. For most small and medium businesses, this takes a few weeks.

Frequently asked questions

An IT support company may only fix problems when they occur. A managed service provider (MSP) takes ongoing, proactive responsibility for your IT, including monitoring, maintenance, security and planning, usually for a fixed monthly fee.

How long does it take to switch IT providers?

For most small and medium businesses, a well-planned onboarding takes a few weeks.

What certifications should an IT provider have?

Look for independent information security certifications such as ISO 27001 or SMB1001, which show the provider protects its own systems to a recognised standard.
